Founded in 2019, Airflow, based in the San Francisco Bay Area, manufactures aircraft for logistics and middle-mile passengers. The aircraft, which can carry nine passengers or 2,000 kilograms of cargo, is manned and operated by a single pilot. The company was started by a team from the former Airbus vehicle eVTOL program, which worked on prototypes of electric powered personal air vehicles.
Over the next decade, Airflow wants to develop autonomous cargo vehicles. Currently, the company is focusing on developing electric take-off and landing (eSTOL) aircraft. Burlington, Vermont-based Beta Technologies is an aerospace manufacturer developing electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft for the cargo and logistics industry. Founded in 2017, the company began as CEO Kyle Clark's senior thesis project. He tried to teach himself about aircraft design and eventually came up with the idea that Beta is evolving now.

The startup has raised about $450 million, including a $368 million Series A that closed in May, a spokesperson said. It has attracted investment from investors including the Amazon Climate Pledge Fund.
But Beta isn't just in the business of developing electric planes; The company provides rapid charging stations at airports and is developing a training program with Canada-based simulation technology maker CAE for electric vertical pilots and maintenance technicians. Clark said Beta has more than 60 fast charging stations online or under construction from here to Arkansas.

Hart Aerospace, a Swedish-based electric aviation startup, is developing a 19-seat electric plane with a range of 250 miles and a backup generator for energy backup and range extension. The company announced its flagship aircraft, the Hart ES-19, and United Airlines and commercial aviation holding company Mesa Air Group placed orders for 200 Hart Aerospace electric planes.
Last summer, the company closed a $35 million Series A funding round led by big names including Bill Gates' Breakthrough Energy Ventures and venture arm United. Hart Aerospace emerged from a research project at Chalmers University of Technology based in Sweden in 2018 and is part of the Winter 2019 cohort of Company Y Combinator. The company's deal with United and Mesa was announced at the same time as the Series A and includes an option to buy up to 100 additional planes, TechCrunch reported.
"We are not looking to reinvent the wheel. Many startups introduce very novel aircraft architecture and spend years in subscale testing to prove the basic functionality of the aircraft," Anders Forslund said in a press release. "We avoid these pitfalls by relying on conventional aircraft architecture," Forslund said. "Almost all of our resources can be devoted to formal development - bringing this aircraft through certification and into commercial service."
